The Louisville Youth Band
(LYB) is a non-profit, noncompetitive youth
music organization serving Metro Louisville and surrounding areas. LYB is dedicated to furthering the cause of music education by
offering young musicians a unique musical experience in an inclusive
environment.
Purpose: Why have a Louisville Youth Band?.....(Glad you asked!)
Some young musicians are members of their school bands but are looking
for additional opportunities to play their instruments. Others cannot
be a part of a banding program due to class scheduling conflicts,
because they are home-schooled or because there is not a band program
offered at their school .
The
Louisville Youth Band is a place where young musicians
can come and use their time and talents in a productive way, learn
more about music and have fun all at the same time.
The
LYB offers its members the opportunity to make music
and interact with other talented, young musicians from the Metro
Louisville area
and the surrounding counties.
The Louisville youth Band is comprised of eight ensembles. These ensembles include three Concert Bands, three Jazz Combos and two Percussion Ensembles.
Entrance into the LYB is based on audition after which
the musician is placed in an ensemble appropriate to his/her
experience and ability.
There are no "chairs" in the LYB! Young people will
encounter enough competition in their lives, especially as musicians,
so the LYB endeavors to provide a non-competitiveenvironment for its members. Therefore, the kids are simply placed
in sections appropriate to their playing ability and they can sit
anywhere within their section. This reinforces the notion
that everyone's effort is vital and important and that the success of
the ensemble relies on the "team" giving 100% effort, not just a few
people!
Our season has two concerts; one in February and a Summer Finale Concert
in May. The season starts in mid
to late October and runs through the end of May. The later start to the
season insures minimal conflicts with school marching band activities.
Rehearsals are held weekly with a Winter break between the end of December and the first of January as well as a Spring Break that runs parallel
with the area public schools' Spring Break.
